These are documents that contain protocols or specifications relating to processing information. This can include technical standards, data standards or information governance standards. An information standard can mandate that a certain type of information is coded in a certain way or uses certain vocabulary. For instance, one information standard is the use of the NHS number across all patient records to identify patients.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Health and Social Care Act 2012 (HSCA 2012) enabled the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care or NHS England to set standards for health and adult social care services in England. The Health and Care Act 2022 (HCA 2022) further strengthened these.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EDespite the usefulness of information standards, the law as currently applied has led to insufficient adoption rates among both IT suppliers and health and care providers. The Act extends the application of information standards and strengthens enforcement powers.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EThese changes are particularly important given plans to improve interoperability of data and the creation of a\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/understandingpatientdata.org.uk\/news\/single-patient-records-nhs-long-read-blog\u0022\u003Esingle patient record\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;in the NHS.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Act is what is known as \u0027enabling legislation\u0027 meaning it gives Ministers powers to set standards, but the standards are not themselves included in the Act.
